The Dyer Island Cruises team always has current information about the seabirds and marine mammals due to its involvement with leading scientists.
Children from the local schools are regularly treated to educational boat trips to instil an appreciation of the marine environment in them and to give them the opportunity to experience the ocean and its creatures.
Dyer Island Cruises initiated a project to help conserve the oystercatcher (an endangered bird) by having information boards placed at the breeding sites on the beaches in the Gansbaai area. Leaflets about the oystercatcher project were distributed at the entrances to the beaches. The aim of the project is to create awareness about the oystercatcher's fragile conservation status and to reduce disturbance at the breeding sites.
Members of Dyer Island Cruises and Birdlife Overberg
have initiated a campaign whereby it will be attempted
to develop a sustainable programme to combat several
negative impacts of marine littering. A pilot project
is being launched along the Overstrand coastline and
will be used to develop a model to be implemented along
the entire South African coastline. Birdlife Walker
Bay, CapeNature, and the Overstrand Municipality have
already become major project partners. The rationale of
this project is to develop an integrated programme to
limit marine littering on an ongoing basis through the
implementation of the following phases:
· Development of
educational material
· Educating
fishermen
· Collecting
litter at sea and off fishing vessels
· Coastal clean-up
campaigns
Dyer Island Cruises regularly arranges educational talks and slide presentations by scientists and naturalists.

CONSUMERS SEAFOOD
POCKET GUIDE
Dyer Island Cruises and
Marine Dynamics is assisting WWF with their South
African Sustainable Seafood Initiative. They have
compiled a species list to help you make the choices
that are better for the environment, when buying seafood
or dining out. This list will inform you about the
conservation status of popular fish species and allow
you to consider your seafood choices from an ecological
perspective. For more information regarding this
project you can visit:
