Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 04 March 2025:
Today we had our first sighting, a Cape fur seal feeding on an octopus, close to the estuary. Shortly after, we spotted a small group of four humpback dolphins in the surf zone before seeing the Bronze Whaler sharks at our shark cage diving vessel, Slashfin. The deeper water behind Pearly Beach was rather quiet with a few terns and penguins so we slowly made our way to Dyer Island. We also saw some Giant Petrel and a European Storm Petrel gathering around a dead fur seal near the island. Giant Petrels are scavengers and often seen around the two islands. The Cape fur seal pups stole the show, curiously travelling alongside our boat up and down the Alley. Not giving up quite yet, we went back out into deeper waters towards Danger Point, and after a long search, we finally found a Bryde’s whale. The whale was relaxed alongside the vessel and we could get a few great looks at it.
