Guide Summary and Photographs
There were as many as 10 Southern Right whales that could be seen at the same time in the bay area today, and if that wasn’t impressive enough the breaching show they put on for us definitely was! The whales were off the chain with their breaches, it started with a young calf who was getting closer and closer to the boat with every breach. The last trip of the day had a large mother who breached 8 times in a row, possibly starting to teach her speckled baby the breaching behaviour, as the young calf gave one good breach attempt after his mother had finished her sequence. On the way to Dyer Island we came across a very large raft of African penguins making their way back to land, who were unusually friendly and stayed beside the boat for everyone to snap a picture! Let’s hope they all made it home safely…
