Guide Summary and Photographs

The crew and clients on Whale Whisperer witnessed a once in a lifetime interaction between Bottlenose dolphins and Southern Right whales this afternoon.  For a few days now in Pearly Beach, there had been a Southern Right whale calf that was believed to have been separated from its mother; as he was alone on each sighting.  Today that same singular calf caught Whale Whisperer’s attention by breaching, on their way towards the calf a pod of Bottlenose dolphins swam over from the Joubertsdam area and began circling the lonely calf, essentially playing with him in a way that appeared to be calming him down.  Not long after this interaction an adult Southern Right whale could be seen breaching in the distance, at which point a few of those dolphins left the calf and disappeared.  Within a matter of minutes the adult Southern Right whale emerged beside the boat with a few dolphins around her, from the behaviour of the calf it is believed that this was his mother.  From the eyes of the crew, it appeared they witnessed a small pod of Bottlenose dolphins aiding a calf in distress and reuniting him with his mother.  There must have been some truly amazing communication occurring under the water, demonstrating just how incredibly intelligent these marine mammals really are! This is a day that won’t soon be forgotten…
