Guide Summary and Photographs
Our trip today started a little differently today as we made a way to Danger Point in search of any cetaceans. Fortunately, after much search and watch the bird activity, we were treated to a Bryde’s Whale. These colossal creatures of the deep can weigh up to 40 tones and reach lengths of 14 meters. We stayed with the animal for quite a while, however due to conditions it became hard to follow. Upon leaving the whale, we slowly made our way towards the island system, along the way however we crossed paths with many pelagic seabirds including the Sooty shearwater, Corey’s shearwater, White chinned petrel and of course the stunning Cape gannets.
As we arrived at a busy Geyser Rock, we were all enthralled by the commotion both on land in the water. It is at this time of year we start to see our recently born seal pups starting to fish by themselves, in turn attracting larger great White sharks to the area. We were also entertained by to two South Giant petrels in the alley that allowed to get unbelievably close to them. We said goodbye to our seals and entered sponge bay at Dyer Island in hopes of pointing out some endangered African Penguins. Luckily, we spotted a pair just sitting on the rocks above the waterline, a very special sighting that we don’t always get to see. This was to be our last sighting of the day as we made our way through the shallows back to the harbour.
