Guide Summary and Photographs

A great day at sea overall. Our first sighting of the day was a beautiful and rare Indian Ocean Humpback Dolphins. This species is South Africa’s rarest coast cetacean, mainly due to the very specific habitat. The tend to reside in less than twenty meters of water or less and are most commonly spotted less then 400m from the shore. Unfortunately, this brings them in very close contact with humans and we often see the dolphins with scars from commercial fishing gear. What a great start to our trip. We then made our way to the shark cage diving vessel and came across quite a large animal just cruising below the surface of the water. We followed the animal around the bay for a while, its dorsal occasionally breaking the surface. Still a “Great” sighting nonetheless. On our way to the Island we stumbled across a few penguins, unfortunately though, they were quite skittish but we managed to get some great views. After searching behind the island for some whale spouts, we headed back towards Geyser Rock for a stop at our 60,000 strong cape fur seal colony. It is always great to watch the seals both in and out the water. This was to be our last sighting of the day, bringing our count to 4 out of the marine big 5!
