Humpback whale! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog
Written by April 24 2021

We had another stunning Saturday at sea with lots of animal sightings. On todays first tour we were spoiled with a humpback whale playing with some kelp in a calm ocean after we have visited Dyer Island and Geyser Rock. And as we were on our way back towards the harbour, we came across a small pod of common dolphins. On todays second tour we were super lucky to find a humpback whale off Danger Point. The whale was very relaxed and approached our vessel a few times in between some longer dives. We also passed the Cape Fur seal colony on Geyser Rock and spotted the African penguins on Dyer Island.
What species did we see today?
Humpback Whale Humpback Whale
One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
