Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa – Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 04 September 2025:
The weather was on our side today with hardly any swell and almost no wind. After leaving the harbour, we were heading straight along the coast past Uilenkraalsmond and stopped at the shark cage diving vessels. After seeing the Bronze Whaler sharks, we continued along the coast to Pearly Beach. Unfortunately, it had been rather quiet, and we continued our journey into deeper waters, trying to find whales and got lucky with some humpback whales once again. Next, our journey continued to Geyser Rock and Shark Alley to see the playful Cape fur seal. On our way there, we were lucky enough to spot a humpback whale in the area, and a few common dolphins made a surprise appearance in our bay. During the tours, we were fortunate to find a pod of common dolphins close to the coast.

What species did we see today?

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

With an 'hourgalss' patch on either side and aerial activity the common dolphin is an agile and majestic species, that may easily reach a speed of 40km/h.
Humpback Whale Humpback Whale
One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.
