Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa – Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 09 June 2025:
It was a cloudy and a bit bumpy day out at sea today. We went on board our whale watching vessel, Dream Catcher and started our journey by heading towards the shallows, where we stopped by the shark cage diving boat, Slashfin. there we got a chance to see our local sharks, the bronze whaler shark and a short-tailed stingray made a surprise appearance. We then headed to Dyer Island, the sea bird paradise, and made a stop by Geyser Rock, where everyone got a chance to see the playful Cape fur seals. And of course, it wouldn’t be a whale watching tour without any whales. We headed into deeper waters behind Geyser Rock, and that’s when we saw it, a whale’s spout. we got a brief look at the Bryde’s whale when it took a deeper dive. One of the largest bony fish made an appearance, a sunfish. Although it was a bit cloudy with some swell, it was a good day on the marine big 5 boat today.

What species did we see today?
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
