Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 26 May 2026:
Leaving Kleinbaai Harbour behind us we had two trips that made their way out into the ocean for a marine big five adventure. Although it was a bit quiet out at sea during our first trip the second one was more than lucky to encounter not one, but three Humpback whales! Both trips made a stop near Dyer Island and Geyser Rock to see everyone’s favorite Cape fur seals and the critically endangered African penguins. Of course, what is a Marine big 5 trip without sharks?! Our amazing local Bronze whaler sharks were observed near the Shark diving vessel, as they showed of their copper shimmer.

What species did we see today?

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
Humpback Whale Humpback Whale
One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.
