Penguins, seals and a sunfish! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog
Written by July 14 2021
After a couple of no sea days, we still had some swell coming through and some wind but we had a great sighting of a raft of African penguin on our way along the De Clyde. We also saw a couple of different seabirds, including Shy Albatross, Giant Petrel and a whole bunch of Swift Terns feeding on a small bait ball. Closer to Dyer Island we spotted more penguins and saw thousands of Cape Fur seals on Geyser Rock. Before heading back to the harbour we made a turn passed Geyser Rock into deeper waters and have been lucky to find a sunfish.
What species did we see today?

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
