Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 09 June 2023:
What an incredible day we had out at sea with some calm water and incredible sightings. First. we moved along the coast to join our sister company Marine Dynamics to see some sharks and were not disappointed, spotting multiple Bronze whalers coming to the cage. Then we headed out into the farther waters to try and find some whales. After some time we finally came across two Bryde’s whales. As usual, these whales were a bit shy, but we managed to see them clearly on the surface. The island system, as always, was rich with sightings. We enjoyed the Cape Fur seals splashing in the shallow water of the alley and those resting on Geyser Rock. And African penguins were also not difficult to spot on Dyer Island.
What species did we see today?
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
Brydes Whale Brydes Whale
The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
