A Look At 4 Of The Marine Big 5, 30 December 2019
Written by December 31 2019
What an amazing day to have been out at sea, with sightings of 4 of our marine big 5! Our trips started with wonderful views of the endangered Indian Ocean Humpbacked Dolphin, which was giving us a show on the coastline after which we headed over to Slashfin to have a look at our beautiful Bronze Whaler Sharks around the cage. We had some great sightings of the Cape Fur Seals on Geyser Rock while the enjoyed the sun and the cool water of Shark Alley. Although a little tricky to spot today, the African Penguin was seen between many of the Cape Cormorants on Dyer Island. Seeing these animals is always a wonderful experience and we can’t wait to see what the next few days bring.
What species did we see today?
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

Humpback dolphins are an endangered species, with small populations living very close to shore, typically in water less than 25m deep and an average home range of 120km. Their proximity to land makes these animals particularly vulnerable to human influence.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
