Albatross! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog
Written by July 5 2021
After two weeks on land due to some storms we finally could go back to sea. At the end of Danger Point we have been lucky with a couple of pelagic sea birds such as Shy Albatross, Sooty Shearwater and White-chinned Petrel. Many of the albatross were soaring across the ocean and made a few close up passes at our vessel Whale Whisperer. A bit further out we spotted two humpback whales, but they were diving for longer periods of time so we moved on and were lucky to find some more whales showing their flukes and even breaching a few times. Arrived at Shark Alley we watched the curious Cape Fur seals before heading back to Kleinbaai harbour.
What species did we see today?
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Humpback Whale Humpback Whale
One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
