Beautiful day at sea! Marine Big 5 daily blog
Written by March 18 2020

After a cruise along the coastline we were heading passed Dye Island into deeper waters where we spotted two adult African penguins and a couple of birds passing us in flight. Just before we arrived in Shark Alley we saw a lot of giant petrels feasting on some food. Seeing these large scavenging birds is always a great treat. Shark Alley was full of playful seals cooling down in the sunny weather. And as per usual many more were lazy and laying on Geyser Rock. Once closer to Dyer Island and in Sponge Bay we have been fortunate to see a lot of African penguins on the rocks posing for some pictures. On the way back we stopped at the shark cage diving boats in the shallows and have been lucky to see a four-meter great white shark swimming passed our vessel. All in all, it has been a very nice day at sea.
What species did we see today?
Great white sharks Great white sharks
Gracious, beautiful, misunderstood - three words used by guests of Dyer Island Cruises after witnessing South Africa's most infamous marine species: The Great White Shark.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Cape Cormorant Cape Cormorant
One of the most famous species of Cormorant in the Western Cape, the Cape Cormorant is well known for it's beautiful turquoise eye and impressive size.
