Daily Trip Update, 22 December 2019
Written by December 23 2019
What a beautiful day out at sea! After a few days without being able to be on the ocean, we are glad to be back in the grove. The day was filled with some sightings from the Bronze Whaler at our shark cage diving vessels, after which the Cape Fur Seals graced us with their acrobatics around Geyser Rock. We were able to spot a few Penguins enjoying the sun on Dyer Island before heading back to Kleinbaai harbour, having seen 3 of the Marine Big 5! On the second trip of the day we were even fortunate to have caught a short glance at an Indian Ocean Humpback Dolphin.
What species did we see today?

Humpback dolphins are an endangered species, with small populations living very close to shore, typically in water less than 25m deep and an average home range of 120km. Their proximity to land makes these animals particularly vulnerable to human influence.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
