Dolphins and sharks, oh my! Marine Big 5 daily blog
Written by March 8 2020
The mist was still lingering this morning as Dream Catcher set her sights on the bay, moving through the Shallows with hopes of finding some dolphins but unfortunately coming up empty handed at this point (read more to see what was encountered late though) the team set off towards our sister company Marine Dynamics to see if we could see a shark, and that we did and a Great White at that as a 4.5m female that we were lucky enough to see in the time that we were there. Off towards the Island we spent some time enjoying the view of the Cape Fur seals on Geyser Rock before we headed off in the search of any other wildlife in the area and that is when the team spotted a small pod of Common dolphin, gracefully porpoising through the water, a stunning sight to finish off the trip.
What species did we see today?
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Common Dolphin Common Dolphin
With an 'hourgalss' patch on either side and aerial activity the common dolphin is an agile and majestic species, that may easily reach a speed of 40km/h.
Great white sharks Great white sharks
Gracious, beautiful, misunderstood - three words used by guests of Dyer Island Cruises after witnessing South Africa's most infamous marine species: The Great White Shark.
