Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa – Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 01 September 2025:
August has come to an end, and we are ready to head into the next month! Welcoming our guests aboard our whale-watching vessel, Dream Catcher, we left Kleinbaai Harbour behind us with eyes wide open on the lookout for marine wildlife. On both trips, we stopped by the Shark cage diving boats first, hoping to get a glimpse of our regular visitors, the Bronze whaler sharks. The individuals stayed further down, which made it harder to see; nonetheless, we were able to catch a glimpse of them. A stop at Geyser Rock, with its estimated population of 40 to 60.000 Cape fur seals, is a must, and left our guests in awe. Due to some stronger easterly winds coming into the bay, we were unfortunately not able to get close to the island. Either way, the crew made sure our guests were not coming short in finding out everything about the island’s history and its population of the critically endangered African Penguins. Both trips were also lucky to have encountered Southern Right whales either close to our local reef system or closer to the island system, which granted great views of the whale pairs!

What species did we see today?
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
Southern Right Whale Southern Right Whale
Southern right whales attract thousands of visitors every year to experience these gentle giants off the South African coast.
