Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 02 October 2024:
We had a sunny start to the day with some easterly wind picking up. All were excited to head out into the bay as it’s such a great time of the year with the southern right whales off our coastline. Not long after leaving the harbour, we spotted some spouts out there. On both trips, we got some beautiful views of the pairs in the swell. After some successful looks at the gentle giants, we let them be and headed towards the Shark Cage diving boats. Around Marine Dynamics Shark cage diving vessel Slahsfin, we were able to get a glimpse of the active Bronze whaler shark. Last but not least we headed to the island system where thousands of Cape fur seals were playing in the cool waters of Shark Alley and relaxing on Geyser Rock. Unfortunately due to the swell, we weren’t able to head closer to Dyer Island on the first trip. A little later in the day we were a bit more lucky being able to approach the island closer and even encounter a raft out in the open!

What species did we see today?
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Southern Right Whale Southern Right Whale
Southern right whales attract thousands of visitors every year to experience these gentle giants off the South African coast.
