Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa – Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 03 August 2025:
Another spectacular day filled with marine life; it’s been a lovely day out at sea, a little wet and windy, but filled with amazing sightings. Throughout all our trips today, we started by visiting our nearest shark diving vessels in an area known as the shallows, where we got to spot our local Bronze whaler shark and an interesting visit from a short-tailed sting ray. Our trips made a stop by Dyer Island and Geyser Rock to get a glimpse of the playful Cape fur seals and the seabird paradise. We also ventured into deeper waters in search of the underwater giants on our coast, and lucky for us, we got a jaw-dropping look at the Humpback whales swimming gracefully in the water. A float of African penguins was also spotted as our little friends in tuxedoes were out and about in search of fish.

What species did we see today?

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.

One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

Humpback dolphins are an endangered species, with small populations living very close to shore, typically in water less than 25m deep and an average home range of 120km. Their proximity to land makes these animals particularly vulnerable to human influence.
