Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 03 February 2025:
We were ready to head out on today’s beautiful and sunny day. With some westerly wind and slight swell coming into our bay we decided to start in deeper waters. Just ahead of the Danger Point peninsula, we started with some of the critically endangered African Penguins! Moving into deeper waters we were accompanied by different coastal and pelagic bird species. After a bit of a longer ride, we ended up in Parly Beach where we encountered a young adult Bryde’s whale! After spending some time with the individual we decided to leave the whale behind and headed towards the island system. Numerous Cape fur seals were cooling down in the cool waters of Shark Alley while others were roaming around Geyser Rock. We made a short stop ahead of Dyer Island to tell our guests a bit more about its population of African Penguins and the history of the island itself. Shortly after we passed the reef system on our way to Marine Dynamics Shark cage diving vessel Slashfin, anchored within the Shallows. Several Bronze whaler sharks were cruising nearby which allowed us some incredible looks at this beautiful species.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.

The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
