Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 04 September 2024:
Even though we had to face a bit more wind today it was not holding us back to enjoy the beautiful sightings we had throughout the day! Welcoming both groups aboard Dream Catcher we left Kleinbaai Harbour behind us, heading further into the bay on the lookout for some marine wildlife. Our first stop at shark-cage diving vessels allowed consistent sightings of the Bronze whaler sharks, actively moving in front of the cage. As we continued, Southern Right whales could be seen in Pearly Beach, once we passed the reef system in more coastal waters. Spending some time with them and getting some incredible views we decided to let them be. The second trip was lucky enough to encounter a second whale species, a breaching Humpback whale in deeper waters. Impressively fin slapping and fast-paced swimming showed off the agility of these whales. The island system, as it is a must, was our next stop. We passed by Geyser Rock and its Cape fur seal colony. Thousands of seals greeted us as we entered Shark Alley and, as always, we got a super close look at them. The neighbouring African penguins on Dyer Island could be seen relaxing on higher-standing rocks, a great finish to the trip.

What species did we see today?
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
Southern Right Whale Southern Right Whale
Southern right whales attract thousands of visitors every year to experience these gentle giants off the South African coast.
Humpback Whale Humpback Whale
One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.
