Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 07 August 2024:
We had a long day ahead but were most certainly excited to head to sea! Welcoming our guests on our whale-watching vessel we launched from either Kleinbaai or Gansbaai Harbour due to spring tide. Looking forward to what we might encounter we were on the lookout for any marine wildlife in the area. For the first trip, we unfortunately experienced fog out at sea which made it a bit more difficult to see but we managed to find a Southern Right whale pair! For the rest of the day, it cleared up and we were able to find some whales in the same area, Pearly Beach. Stopping by the Cape fur seal colony we were met by thousands of seals relaxing on the island or playing in the cool waters of Shark Alley. Due to swell we could not head close enough to see the endangered African Penguins on Dyer Island but managed to find some rafts out in the open. Throughout the day we mostly managed to stop by Shark cage diving boats to get a glimpse of the Bronze whaler sharks.

What species did we see today?

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
