Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 14 May 2024:
After the conditions have improved and the swell has calmed down we are ready to head back out for a Marine Big 5 adventure! Welcoming our guests on Dream Catcher we, as usual, left Kleinbaai Harbour behind us, preparing to look out for any wildlife. One of the obligatory stops is of course Marine Dynamics Shark cage diving vessel Slashfin. Being able to spend some time around their boat we were very grateful after some Bronze whaler sharks came to the surface to investigate divers and boats. Sure enough, the activity at the island system was great as numerous Cape fur seals were swimming up and down Shark Alley, enjoying the cool waters. Around Dyer Island, several birds nesting on the island were out and about. A few of the endangered African Penguins could also be seen sitting on the boulders and roaming around on top of the island. Both trips were super lucky to have encountered Bryde’s whales as well as a huge pod of Common Dolphins! The dolphins did not disappoint and most certainly left our guests in awe! Once again, thanks everyone for joining our Marine Big 5 tour!

What species did we see today?
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Brydes Whale Brydes Whale
The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
Common Dolphin Common Dolphin
With an 'hourgalss' patch on either side and aerial activity the common dolphin is an agile and majestic species, that may easily reach a speed of 40km/h.
