Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 14 May 2023:
We began our trip this morning by making a stop at our shark cage diving vessel, Slashfin! Here we got some great looks at the beautiful Bronze Whaler sharks and even a Short-Tail stingray. We then ventured into some deeper waters where we were incredibly fortunate to come across a very calm Bryde’s whale which comfortably cruised alongside us for some time! Next up was Dyer Island, where we were able to spot the endangered African Penguins on land! After this the world-famous Shark Alley awaited us. The 60,000-strong Cape Fur seals were as playful as ever and put on quite a display for everyone on board! On our way back to Kleinbaai Harbour we were lucky enough to come across a large raft of the endangered African Penguins out at sea which was a real treat.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
