Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 19 March 2024:
We had some great conditions in the bay and set sail this morning from Kleinbaai harbour towards the shark cage diving boats. We saw plenty of Bronze Whaler sharks and continued passed a reef into deeper waters. They were rather quiet and we approached Dyer Island to see the African Penguin as well as the Cape fur seals on Geyser Rock. Next, we ventured again into some deeper waters towards Danger Point and spotted a Bryde’s whale. After seeing it surface multiple times we continued and were surprised by a humpback whale and various seabirds.

What species did we see today?

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
