Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 21 December 2023:
Today was a sunny day with just a light breeze but some swell. We launched in the morning from Kleinbaai harbour and were heading as usual straight along the coast past Kleinbaai, Franskraal, and continued past Uilenkraalsmond along the coast till we reached the shark cage diving boats in the shallows. Having a closer look in front of the cage we spotted several Bronze Whaler sharks swimming closer to the surface but also deeper below. Next, we passed a reef where we had a closer look at the kelp and continued towards the islands and even a bit further beyond. At the two Islands Geyser Rock and Dyer Island, we saw plenty of different seabirds and thousands of Cape fur seals. It is breeding season for the fur seals at the moment and we were lucky to see plenty of pups.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
