Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 21 July 2022:
A wonderful day out at sea today left us in awe, with trip 1 having some amazing sightings of Humpback Whales and a special Southern Right whale sighting too! The bird activity was superb with some views of pelagic seabirds such as White Chinned Petrels, Cape Cormorants, Giant Petrels, Sooty Shearwaters, African Penguins and even two Shy Albatross. On our second trip, we even witnessed a trio of Southern Giant Petrels feeding on a Cape Fur seal! The Cape Fur seals were a treat on Geyser Rock and we also stopped to get some looks at the African Penguin on Dyer Island. After some fin-tastic activity from some Bronze Whaler Sharks around the shark cage diving vessel, we made our way back to the harbour with 4 out of the Marine Big 5 crossed off our lists today. Our second trip had some beautiful views of a Southern Right whale and a surprise sighting of a Mola Mola (sunfish) as well!

What species did we see today?
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
Humpback Whale Humpback Whale
One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Southern Right Whale Southern Right Whale
Southern right whales attract thousands of visitors every year to experience these gentle giants off the South African coast.
