Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 22 August 2022:
Today was a swell of a day out at sea! We had two marvellous trips with some fantastic wildlife sightings. Across both trips today we were incredibly fortunate to enjoy some spectacular Humpback Whale action and were even lucky enough to catch a pair breaching for us on our first trip! On both trips we passed by Dyer Island, home to the colony of endangered African Penguins and we were able to spot some of these beauties out feeding on a bait ball of fish on trip number two. Our trips also saw an impressive plethora of seabirds including countless Shy Albatrosses, White Chinned Petrels, Cape Gannets, Sub Antarctic Skuas and Cape Cormorants! Of course, no Marine Big 5 trip would be complete without paying a visit to Geyser Rock and our shark cage diving vessel. At Geyser Rock we enjoyed our 60,000-strong Cape Fur seal colony which put on quite a show for our guests on board. By our shark cage diving vessel, Slashfin, we witnessed some beautiful Bronze Whaler shark action as well as a Short-Tail Stingray around the boat on the first trip. All in all, a fantastic day aboard Dream Catcher for both our guests and crew alike!

What species did we see today?
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
Humpback Whale Humpback Whale
One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
