Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 22 November 2022:
A bright and early start this morning for our one and only trip of the day. We launched from Kleinbaai Harbour and prepared to start moving along the coast however within moments of leaving land we had a very welcoming sight of a Southern Right whale mother-calf pair. We spent some time enjoying the view of these two as they moved through the shallow waters, the calf taking some time to play around its’ mother before we let them be and moved on. We encountered another mother-calf pair not too far away however as we approached, it appeared that this pair was on the move and quite quickly so we continued to slowly move past them and leave them be. Towards the end of our cruise through the shallow coastal waters, we made a turn to the shark cage diving vessels where we met up with our sister company Marine Dynamics onboard Slashfin, allowing us to have a look at a number of Bronze whaler sharks. Finishing up our stunning morning we paid a visit to the island system, having a closer look at the Cape fur seal colony on Geyser Rock and spotting some endangered African penguins along the waters’ edge on Dyer Island. A stunning and successful day out in the bay.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

Southern right whales attract thousands of visitors every year to experience these gentle giants off the South African coast.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
