Marine Big 5 Daily Blog 24 January

Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.

Trip Summary 204 January 2025:

What a beautiful day out at sea we had! We faced perfect conditions with a slight westerly wind to cool us down. We left our local harbour in Kleinbaai behind us and headed towards the coastal areas until we reached the Shallows, an area popular for Shark cage diving. Stopping by Marine Dynamics Shark cage diving vessel Slashfin, we got glimpses of the incredible Bronze whaler sharks investigating the cage and our boat! Moving on we made a short stop in our local reef system where we picked up a piece of floating kelp to give our guests a hands-on experience about our amazing ecosystem. Our next stop led us to the island system. At Dyer Island, the critically endangered African Penguins were once again sunbathing on the rocks, on top of the island and closer to the water. The Cape fur seal colony on Geyser Rock shared the plans and numerous were cuddled together enjoying the sun while others used to opportunity to refresh in the cool waters of Shark Alley. Towards the end of the trip, we made our way into deeper waters where shortly after a Bryde’s whale was spotted. Several diving birds in the area indicated some fish underneath the surface which most likely attracted the individual to our area! Once again, thanks everyone for joining our Marine Big 5 adventure!
