Marine Big 5 Daily Blog 24 September

Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa – Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.

Trip Summary  24 September 2025:

Due to a storm passing much further south, we had a bit of swell along the coast, but that didn’t affect the great sightings of wildlife we had today. On all trips, we were able to find our winter and spring visitors, the southern right whales. Some Bronze Whaler sharks could be seen at the shark cage diving boats, and closer to the islands, we saw the Cape fur seals on Geyser Rock. At Dyer Island, we saw some penguins and other seabirds. The stronger winds further south also brought some pelagic seabirds closer to the coast, and we saw a Shy Albatross, a White-chinned Petrel, and some of us managed to get a brief look at a Soft-plumaged Petrel too. One of the trips was fortunate to see Port and Starboard, the infamous orcas passing through the bay – what a great day at sea!
