Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 25 November 2024:
Due to a storm coming through the area later in the day, we headed out rather early before we won’t be able to head out for the next two days. Welcoming our guests aboard we left Kleinbaai Harbour behind us and headed towards the Shallows, an area popular for its density of sharks. Stopping by the Marine Dynamics Shark cage diving vessel we got a glimpse of a short-tailed stingray. We made our way through the reef system to head towards Pearly Beach and its shallow areas hoping for a sighting of Southern Right whales. Lucky us, we spotted two pairs not too far off. Spending some time with the whales while they enjoyed our company and even approached us to investigate, we let them be and continued sometime after. Facing the wind we headed to the island system. Cape fur seals were sleepy on Geyser Rock while others were wide awake playing in the cool waters of Shark Alley. The endangered African Penguins on Dyer Island got ready for the day leaving their artificial penguin nest behind to look for some fish or observing us from boulders overlooking their little bay. Once again, thanks everyone for joining our trips and we will see you soon!

What species did we see today?

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

Southern right whales attract thousands of visitors every year to experience these gentle giants off the South African coast.
