Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa – Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 29 July 2025:
It was an amazing day out at sea today, with not only the weather in our favour but also the marine life. From the skies above to the depths below, it felt like nature was putting on a special show just for us. Out at sea, we managed to spot the acrobat of the ocean, the humpback whale. Full of luck, we also managed to witness our seasonal visitors, the Southern right whales, a sight that never fails to capture the heart. We ventured further and made a stop by Dyer Island and Geyser Rock. Now we wouldn’t call it an amazing trip without the ancient predators as well; our trips made stops by the shark diving vessels and were rewarded with up-close glimpses of the powerful Bronze whaler sharks. All in all, it was an extraordinary day at sea, one filled with remarkable wildlife encounters and unforgettable memories across all our trips.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.

One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.
Common Dolphin Common Dolphin
With an 'hourgalss' patch on either side and aerial activity the common dolphin is an agile and majestic species, that may easily reach a speed of 40km/h.
