Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 29 October 2024:
We are back out at sea! After being unable to head to sea for the past two days, the wind and the swell have calmed down and we are ready for new adventures! Leaving Kleinbaai Harbour behind us, excited as ever, we headed further into our bay, looking for some wildlife. Being confident we would see at least four out of the Marine Big 5 we made it come true and spotted whales, sharks, penguins and seals throughout the day. To spot some of the Penguins and seals we headed to both colonies. Dyer Island, is home to the endangered African Penguins and Geyser Rock with its population of an estimated 60.000 Cape fur seals. Within the Shallows, a hotspot for Shark cage diving, we stopped by Marine Dynamics vessel Slashfin to get a glimpse of the incredible Bronze whaler sharks. Southern Right whales were encountered at their current hangout spot, Pearly Beach, where they accompanied us for a bit of time, swimming alongside the boat and enjoying the swell close to shore.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
