Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 31 August 2024:
We reached the end of August and were not disappointed. The sun was out and the temperature had risen for the day. Excited to see what might be out there for us today we welcomed our guests aboard, left Kleinbaai Harbour behind us and headed further into our bay. On our lookout for Marine wildlife, we stopped by Marine Dynamics Shark cage diving vessel Slashfin hoping for some Bronze whaler shark activity. As the island system is a mandatory stop we were welcomed into Shark Alley by thousands of Cape fur seals swimming in the cool channel, sunbathing on Geyser Rock or watching us curiously as we passed by. Our beloved endangered African Penguins could be seen sitting on the boulders while our guests learned a bit more about the island’s history and the Penguins themselves. As our best whale sightings of our gentle giants are still around Pearly Beach we made our way over on all trips. To no regret, we encountered a few Southern Right whale pairs moving alongside the boat granting amazing views to our guests. Once again, thanks to everyone for joining our Marine Big 5 trips!

What species did we see today?
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Southern Right Whale Southern Right Whale
Southern right whales attract thousands of visitors every year to experience these gentle giants off the South African coast.
