Playful calf! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog
Written by October 4 2021
On our way to the shark cage diving boats we encountered a southern right whale cow-calf pair that were very relaxed alongside our vessel. After having watched them for a while we continued and spotted some more whales along the way. One calf was particularly playful, rolling around and slapping its flippers onto the surface. The Cape fur seals in the water were just as playful, jumping around and chasing after the boat. After a quick stop closer to Dyer Island we continued through the bay and made a stop to view a raft of African Penguin.
What species did we see today?

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
