Saturday sightings! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog
Written by June 5 2021
Although we had some easterly wind and swell in the bay, we had a great time at sea with good sightings. First, we spotted a raft of a couple of penguins before we encountered a Bryde’s whale a bit further out in the deeper waters. The whale came a up several times close to the boat before we moved off towards Dyer Island and Geyser Rock. As usual plenty of Cape Fur seals were lazy and sun bathing on Geyser Rock and some younger ones were playful and swimming energetically up and down Shark Alley. On our way back to Kleinbaai we also passed the shark cage diving boats in the shallower waters of the bay.
What species did we see today?
Brydes Whale Brydes Whale
The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
