Sharks, seals and more! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog

Today was once again a picture-perfect day at sea with no wind and swell. First we spotted a couple of African penguins and passed Danger Point and the Birkenhead rock towards Dyer Island, Kira spotted a Bryde’s whale for us that came up several times before taking a deeper dive and disappeared in the ocean. The younger Cape Fur seals were having a great time swimming up and down Shark Alley and some were following our vessel as we slowly cruised passed them. We also stopped by at the shark cage diving boat, where got to see some great shark activity and counted three sharks around their vessel. On our way back we cruised along the beautiful coastline and soon reached Kleinbaai harbour.
What species did we see today?
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Brydes Whale Brydes Whale
The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
Great white sharks Great white sharks
Gracious, beautiful, misunderstood - three words used by guests of Dyer Island Cruises after witnessing South Africa's most infamous marine species: The Great White Shark.
