Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa – Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 06 August 2025:
After some winter storms and rain, we could head back out to sea, but we still had some swell hitting our coastline. We started the trips at Danger Point and scanned the deeper waters for some spouts. Lucky enough, we were able to spot some whales! Even though we had to be patient, we were rewarded with a few looks at Humpback whales. We headed straight towards Geyser Rock and its Cape fur seal colony. Thousands of individuals were on the island today, leaving our guests as always in awe. We also get a closer look at the endangered African Penguins on Dyer Island. Unfortunately, due to today’s conditions, not all trips were able to approach Dyer Island close enough. Throughout the day, we had the opportunity to stop by the Marine Dynamics Shark Cage diving vessel, where we got some looks at the Bronze whaler shark! A nicer extra throughout the day was pelagic birds such as the Shy Albatross accompanying our vessel.

What species did we see today?

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
Humpback Whale Humpback Whale
One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.
