Two “Whale”y Good Trips! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog 5 June
Written by July 5 2022

Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 05 July 2022:
It has been a “fin”omenal day out at sea for our guests and crew aboard Dream Catcher with some incredible sightings!
On our first trip of the day, we witnessed some impressive action from a group of five Humpback Whales, with many breaches, lots of flipper slapping, and fluking. We enjoyed these beautifully calm whales for quite some time as they happily cruised alongside us. On the rest of our trip, we spotted endangered African Penguins both on land and in the water as well as our ever-inquisitive, 60,000-strong Cape Fur seal colony on Geyser Rock! At our shark cage diving vessel, we were also lucky enough to get a glimpse of a stunning Bronze Whaler shark. Our afternoon trip kicked off with some mesmerising looks at a young Southern Right whale playing with some kelp and shortly after, we had spectacular displays from a pair of Humpback whales. We also got some great looks at the Cape Fur Seals and African Penguins on the islands while the sharks left lasting impressions as we made our way to the harbour.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Humpback Whale Humpback Whale
One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.
Great white sharks Great white sharks
Gracious, beautiful, misunderstood - three words used by guests of Dyer Island Cruises after witnessing South Africa's most infamous marine species: The Great White Shark.
