Whales, seals and penguins! Marine Big 5
Written by July 18 2021

Today was another beautiful day at sea with lots of sunshine and no wind. Once launched from Kleinbaai harbour we were heading towards Danger Point where we got to see a Bryde’s whale travelling alongside our vessel. On our way towards Dyer Island, we saw another Bryde’s whale and a lot of sea birds feeding on some smaller bait fish. And before we could reach the island, we encountered a humpback whale as well. After a few passes by the Cape Fur seal colony, we stopped closer to Dyer Island and then made our way along the coast back to Kleinbaai. What a great Sunday at sea.
What species did we see today?
Brydes Whale Brydes Whale
The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
Humpback Whale Humpback Whale
One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
