A Marine Big 5 Kinda Day! 2 December 2019
Written by December 3 2019

What a day! We had a jawsome morning when we stopped over at Slashfin to spot some sharks, we were lucky to see two species today, our beautiful Bronze Whaler shark as well as our spectacular Great White shark. While we took a short stop to look around, our trusty spotter Kira used his hawk eye vision and spotted a pod of lovely common dolphins feeding on a school of fish, shortly after which a Brydes whale was seen just a few meters behind the pod. Our Cape Fur seals were a delight swimming around shark alley and we’re seeing more and more pups born every day on Geyser Rock. The last stop was to catch a glimpse of our African Penguin on Dyer Island, we got to catch a glimpse of a few scattered amongst the Cape Cormorants. A very Marine Big 5 kinda day!

What species did we see today?
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Common Dolphin Common Dolphin
With an 'hourgalss' patch on either side and aerial activity the common dolphin is an agile and majestic species, that may easily reach a speed of 40km/h.
Brydes Whale Brydes Whale
The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
Great white sharks Great white sharks
Gracious, beautiful, misunderstood - three words used by guests of Dyer Island Cruises after witnessing South Africa's most infamous marine species: The Great White Shark.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
