A Swell Day! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog 8 July
Written by July 8 2022
Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 08 July 2022:
We had a swell of a day out at sea today with some fantastic action on both trips!
We were incredibly fortunate to come across a total of eight Humpback Whales across two trips and on our second we were even lucky enough to spend some time with a Bryde’s Whale. Both trips also saw some great bird activity with numerous Shy Albatrosses, Cape Gannets and Sub Antarctic Skuas. Of course, our Marine Big 5 trips would not have been complete without a visit to our island systems and our shark cage diving vessel, Slashfin. On Geyser Rock we were able to enjoy our 60,000-strong Cape Fur seal colony and we passed by Dyer Island, home to our colony of endangered African Penguins which we were fortunate enough to see out on the water on both trips! At our shark cage diving boat, we witnessed some breathtaking Great White shark action as well as a glimpse of a Bronze Whaler shark. On our second trip, we also spotted a Mola Mola (Sunfish) cruising in deeper waters who we stayed with for a short period.
All in all, a great day on board Dream Catcher for our crew and lovely guests who joined us!

One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.

The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
Great white sharks Great white sharks
Gracious, beautiful, misunderstood - three words used by guests of Dyer Island Cruises after witnessing South Africa's most infamous marine species: The Great White Shark.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
