Bryde’s whale and more! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog
Written by January 28 2021

Out of Kleinbaai we had a great time at sea, the sun was shining and we only had a light breeze from the south-west. Our tour started with a sighting on an African penguin just as we passed Uilenkraalsmond. After having made a turn through the bay at Pearly Beach we were heading out towards Geyser Rock and Dyer Island to see more of the endangered African penguins. The Cape Fur seal pups on Geyser Rock a truly growing up quickly now, how wonderful to see them out there at their colony. On our way we made a turn passed Danger Point and were rewarded with more penguins, Cape cormorants and a Bryde’s whale. What a special sighting it was, we could have not asked for more.
What species did we see today?
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape Cormorant Cape Cormorant
One of the most famous species of Cormorant in the Western Cape, the Cape Cormorant is well known for it's beautiful turquoise eye and impressive size.

The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
