Bryde’s Whale! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog
Written by May 30 2021
Today we had amazing weather throughout with almost no wind and just a little bit of swell. We launched two trips from Kleinbaai harbour and had similar sightings on both. We encountered several groups of diving birds and lots of penguins feeding on small bait fish, we are so lucky to encounter over a hundred penguins and a variety of other seabirds. Further along the way we also encountered a Bryde’s whale coming up several times close to our vessel Whale Whisperer. Next we made a slow pass at the Cape Fur seal colony and stopped closer to Dyer Island for some more penguins. On our way back we passed the shallows and the shark cage diving boats.
What species did we see today?

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.

The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
