First trip for 2021! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog
Written by January 2 2021
Our first trip of the new year started off with a great sighting of some Bronze Whaler sharks around a cage diving boat anchored close to shore. After having spent some time observing these sharks, we moved on towards Dyer Island and Geyser Rock. The Cape Fur seal pups, which were born a few weeks ago, are still unable to swim but were gathering close to the water on such a hot and sunny day to get cooled off by some splashes of water. Close to Dyer Island we spotted a juvenile penguin swimming around and more on the island itself on a stretch of beach. On the way back to the harbour we had a smooth ride with the wind in our back and came across some more penguins before making it back into Kleinbaai harbour.
What species did we see today?
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
Cape Cormorant Cape Cormorant
One of the most famous species of Cormorant in the Western Cape, the Cape Cormorant is well known for it's beautiful turquoise eye and impressive size.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
