Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa – Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 02 September 2025:
Another life-changing Marine Big 5 experience, it was a good day out at sea today when it came to sightings, but weather-wise it was a bit windy, with the wind picking up later in the day. Our trip followed the route starting at Danger Point and deeper waters. Out there, we first got to see a humpback whale and a bit closer to the islands, found two southern right whales heading past Geyser Rock. Dyer Island and Geyser Rock were our next destinations. When we arrived at the penguin paradise, it was a bit difficult to spot the residents, but we managed to spot a few between the rocks. In Shark Alley, the Cape fur seals were pleased by our visit as they saw us alongside the vessel playfully. On our way back, we stopped by the shark diving vessels to get some good looks at the local Bronze Whaler Sharks.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.
Southern Right Whale Southern Right Whale
Southern right whales attract thousands of visitors every year to experience these gentle giants off the South African coast.
