Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 08 September 2023:
The Dyer Island Cruises Team was back to sea today after three days off due to some strong winds and swell present in the area. We started the day with quite a bit of swell out there, but that didn’t stop us from having an absolutely incredible trip filled with whale sightings. We, first, headed out into the deeper waters and got lucky to encounter two Humpback whales, we enjoyed the whales for some time and headed to the island system to see some Cape Fur seals. Little did we know, there were four Southern Right whales waiting for us just next to Dyer Island! We, then, made our way to the shark cage diving vessels and had awesome activity from Bronze whaler sharks right in front of us.
On our second tour, we were heading straight towards the island and got lucky with a big group of endangered African Penguins. They were super calm alongside our vessel so we could get some really nice looks before moving on towards the island. Just around the corner of Dyer Island, we came across a southern right whale and her calve, what a beautiful sighting! After watching the Cape Fur seals on Geyser Rock and Shark Alley we continued our journey back to the shallower waters and had a look at some Bronze whale sharks at the shark cage diving boats.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.
Southern Right Whale Southern Right Whale
Southern right whales attract thousands of visitors every year to experience these gentle giants off the South African coast.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
