Marine Big 5 Daily Blog 14 February

Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.

Trip Summary 14 February 2024:

Today we had it slightly cooler with an overcast sky but still perfect conditions to head out to sea. After our launch from Kleinbaai harbour we encountered a pod of bottlenose dolphins.  At the shark cage diving boats we were lucky and got some great looks of the Bronze Whaler sharks they were seeing. After crossing a reef system our journey took us into the deeper waters of the bay.Next, we approached the islands, Geyser Rock and Dyer Island, there we saw the Cape fur seals as well as the endangered African Penguin.

At present there are two recognized species of bottlenose dolphin, and in some cases, both species can be found in the same area. The two species are the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), and the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (T. aduncus). In addition, there is a great deal of variation in colouration, diet and behaviour. The difference between the common bottlenose and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin are subtle, but the common bottlenose dolphin generally larger and more robust with a slight darker colouration.
